God is just
Even if we don't believe it, God is just and He punishes sin. He loves man but hates sin. He will show his wrath to the sinners. Jesus is our advocate (1 John 2:1), he took the punishment that we deserved because of our sin upon himself at the cross. If we don't believe in Jesus Christ, the wrath of God remains on us (John 3:36).
